It has nothing to do with how many plays he is getting in a game. It has to do with how his arthritic knee is feeling. If he arrives at the stadium and his knee is painful enough to limit his movement he won't be getting the same number of plays he otherwise would. Neither management, Gurley, or we fans can control it. I think that we tend to want it to be connected to "management" because that is something that can be controlled (read- we can fault it) Truth is it all depends on how the player feels at game time. Admittedly the blame game dovetails into McVay's comments about its his fault, etc. Those comments imply that there really is no flare up issues and they are simply preserving the runner for the "possibility" of a flareup in the future. Anyone that suffers from arthritic joints can see through this easily. IMO that door needs to be closed.
I think your account is too fanciful, W. And since Gurley ran well in some games and had his carries restricted anyway, the "runs if it feels good" theory does not hold up.
It has nothing to do with how his knee feels on a given day. Management is real, and other players who have had arthritic knees have talked about it.
The worst case alternative is that overuse makes it painful and swollen to the point where he cannot run at all. But when that happens (as it did in December) the misses a couple of games.
The flare up issue is not the same thing as feeling pain on a give day or not. It literally makes it so the player cannot run.
