Goff has demonstrated top-five ability. From watching games on TV, it is impossible to know all the facts, but I suspect that any regression Goff has shown this season can be attributed to shaky play by the OL and bad play calling by McVay. While watching the Bengals game, I thought of one of the worst curses that can fall upon a fan of an NFL team. This curse is exemplified by Andy Dalton, a QB who is just good enough to hold onto a starting job for nine years but isn't good enough to have ever won a playoff game. Dalton is only 32. So he could keep the Bengals mired in mediocrity for several more years. At this point, that team would be fortunate to rebound from an 0-8 start and return even to mediocrity any time in the near future. Rams fans should be thankful to have Goff, who could prove to be the best QB over a long term that the Rams have had in several decades. Warner's reign was all too short. They never had a combination of quality and duration from Warner all the way back to Roman Gabriel. Other teams have had long term high quality QBs such as Tarkenton, Staubach, Stabler, Bradshaw, Elway, Marino, Manning, Kelly, Favre, Montana, Young, Aikman, Brees, etc. It doesn't seem likely that Goff will ascend to the level of that group, but it would be nice for the Rams to have a QB consistently ranked in the top five or top ten throughout a career. This has never happened in the 50+ years I have followed them.
