I think this is where you miss the boat on the completion % and why it's overrated, btw he is at 61.9 and Mahomes is at 65.2 a whopping 3.3% difference and people consider Mahomes the greatest thing since sliced bread.
This quote says it all about completion %
“THE DESIGN OF AN OFFENSE HAS GREAT IMPACT ON COMPLETION PERCENTAGE. IF WE’RE GOING TO, YOU CAN TAKE A YOUNG MAN AND ENCOURAGE HIM TO CHECK DOWN, SUDDENLY YOU LOOK UP AND HE’S COMPLETING 68 OR 70 PERCENT OF HIS PASSES. THAT’S WONDERFUL. BUT WHAT DO YOU SACRIFICE TO GET THAT DONE? WE DON’T HAVE A VERTICAL PASSING GAME SUDDENLY.”
“YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WITH COMPLETION PERCENTAGE.”
The Rams and Goff are hardly ever checking anything down ....and lets just say the line play has been anything but spectacular this year that puts more pressure on this offense
Do you win games? That's the bottom line and Goff has been one of the best in the NFL in that dept since 2017
Again, it doesn't say you disregard or ignore completion percentage.
And as someone pointed out earlier, Goff isn't attempting a lot of long, low percentage passes. In fact, he's attempting the fewest. So, compared to other QB's, his percentage is low(while other categories like TD's, TD%, YPA, etc. aren't elevated). Considering the system and coach and what other QB's have done it it, it's low. Considering recent competition, it's low. Considering his receiving corps compared to other teams, it's low. Considering that one of Goff's strengths is supposed to be accuracy, it's low.
The point is, I'm not looking at his completion % out of context. It's just low.
As far as context goes, are you really sure you want to compare Mahommes and Goff? If Goff had a 15 to 1 TD/INT ratio like Mahommes, maybe the completion % wouldn't be as much of an issue. That he did most of that without Hill and after losing Hunt coming off of an MVP, historic season compared to Goff who sank to the bottom of the league in most statistics makes the completion % issue seem rather insignificant.
