There is a difference between overrated and irrelevant. I agree, completion percentage by itself isn't an indicator of success or failure. But, as PART of what I said I think it's perfectly valid.
Plus, I think there's a big difference between demanding a minimum of 65% and being a bottom dweller. Not sure that author chose the best examples of why context is important to remember. Using Alex Smith and Tim Tebow as reasons completion percentage isn't all that important rings a little hollow.
When Daryle Lamonica has a low completion percentage because he throws a lot of deep passes and in more obvious passing situations is different than when Goff is in a VERY QB friendly system with some of the best receivers in football still failing to complete even 60% against poor teams in comfortable wins.
If he's struggling now, what's going to happen when the Rams face decent to good teams? This was an opportunity for Goff to get some relatively easy completions and put up some numbers and start looking better. Since he only sort of did that, it's hard not to feel trepidation about the better teams the Rams will be facing. Goff wasn't sacked a single time the past two games yet the conditions still weren't good enough for him to complete 60% of his passes?
You may feel that it's unimportant to focus on such a thing in easy wins but I think it's the opposite. There is no reason for Goff to be struggling with his completion percentage but he still was. It suggests to me that the overall success he's had the past couple of weeks was more about the inferior opponents than it was about him being better than he's been. It's much how I felt about the numbers he put up against SF and AZ to finish the regular season last year. They were good numbers but they were just masking the same problems he's been having. When you can't complete 60% of your passes, especially against bad teams, it's going to cost you in important games.
This team is built around Goff and he has to play well for them to win against good teams. If he can't consistently complete his passes or potentially throws 3 interceptions against the Bengals then it's concerning to wonder how that level of performance is going to serve he team the rest of the year.
