much appreciated zn. logically and intuitively, this makes sense to me.
would you happen to have the same info on 2nd contracts for successful cb's (peters) and edge rushers (fowler)? just wondering what they'd cost to keep if they pan out during 2019.
at the current course and speed i can't see how goff does not get paid rack rate when it's time to re-up.
and i do not think that, in and of itself, is the kiss of death for the rams cap space. goff's performance during his rookie contract basically allowed the rams to invest in other positions. one of them being whitworth at lt. a luxury at the the qb position not many teams get to enjoy. the tables look like they will turn soon.
i think the biggest question mark the rams are facing on the cap space in the next 2 or 3 years is at left tackle. if none of the young, relatively cheap prospects in house don't prove to be a viable successor, finding an established talent in free agency will put a lot of stress on the cap space. the good news is they have multiple prospects on deck. they also have 1 more draft, including a 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounder, before whitworth is likely gone. even if whitworth stays it would put strain on the cap space.
edge rusher and cb are my next 2 concerns.
All you can do really is look at signings in the last couple of years and those can give you a rough idea.
This was not exhausting research on my part. I looked at a few. Like I said, gives a rough idea.
CBs:Fuller, Howard 2018: 14-15 M.
Johnson, Rhodes 2017: 14 M
This suggests that in 2019, Peters will be between 15-16 M.
Edge rushers: this one is harder to do because there is no "edge rusher" category, so I just did 4/3 DEs and 3/4 OLBs together.
Plus, as with many positions--WR, CB---there are "superstar" 2nd contracts that are ahead of the norm. So I won't count either Mack or Von Miller. Those guys really belong in an unofficial but very real category loosely called "best defender" (Donald belongs to that too).
Za'Darius Smith 2019: 16.5 M
Ford 2019: 17 M
If that's any indication it will be at least 17 M, or thereabouts.
Based on that I would say signing both Fowler and Peters would cost together at least 32-33 M.
