we are in deep doo.
And, if this defense hinges on having to take a defender in round 1, then shame on management.
I'm predicting the free agents signings...and possible trade is still on the table...one or more of our signed players can redo a contract to free up some cap space.
What I am saying is just obvious and pretty clear. You don't have to argue with a strawman. The defense is weaker and needs to be developed, and that's not true of the offense. You strengthen a unit by starting with the best defender you can obtain, who is a fit and fills one of the positions of need. That's just good policy. The "hinges" part was your own misread of that.
When it comes to stocking a weakened unit, there's no need to put any of that on the back burner, neglect it, downplay it---you look FIRST for the strongest player who can help you on defense.
That's ASSUMING there is no high ranked player of incredible value on offense who falls to them.
This is just an opinion but I bet if it were the other way around, and the offense needed stocking and the defense was set, you would say the exact same thing in defense of taking an offensive player in round 1.
A deep draft means the players ranked higher are even better, and you build a weakened unit by starting with at least one guy who you think may be a star or a top player, and go from there.
If they draft no offensive skill players whatsoever this draft (except qb) I would be fine with that.
