Free agency has been all about defense.
We also third rounders as well.
And, as has been mentioned...the unit that showed up in the playoffs was the defense.
If you want to stock a weakened defense you take the best available defender who is a fit in round 1. And then take more in the next rounds.
They don't need offensive weapons, it's a deep defensive draft, they have defensive needs, and you start by just taking the best defender who is there in round 1 because by round 3, they won't be as good as the one you get in round 1.
You turn a weak unit into a strength by adding at least one highly ranked player, regardless of position (CB? LB? DE? NT?) and going from there.
So yeah IN THAT SENSE (which is important I think) taking an offensive player at round 1 is ignoring the defense. (That's assuming there's no situation where some highly ranked offensive player, the highest ranked remaining guy on their board, falls to them.)
