If the pass was thrown to Cooks' right instead of right at him it would have been a TD. (The DB wouldn't have been able to get to Cooks if he had to run another 10 yds to get there ...).
He saw in a split second that the coverage on Cooks was broken. That was a sudden thing and not expected.
At what point in seeing that then stepping up and throwing would the qb register that a DB 20 yards from the play was going to come into the picture?
His goal was to throw a pass to the back of the endzone that would arrive where Cooks could catch it in a scenario where Cooks was running wide open all alone. That was all in a split second. Even BB was gratefully astonished at the DB's play.
