I disagree.
I think we set up the pass by running the ball, witness our extensive use of play action.
You can't run, you can't play action.
And if the run is working, why pass?
Why pass?
Because generally passing leads to scoring more and an overall more explosive offense.
A super great running game averages 5+ yards per rushing attempt. But a great passing game averages 10-15 yards per attempt.
Or think of it this way, we ran about as good as ever against Dallas yet we only scored 30 points which is
below our season average.
McVay preaches balance because that's how you become a super great offense. Run and pass are both important and when both are working they help loosen up the other.
I hear ya about the passing game, dz. McVay will never abandon that.
But a 13 minute TOP advantage in a playoff game is a wonderful thing, too. That is largely a byproduct of a strong running game.
Here’s what I think. McVay will employ both the run and the pass at times of his choosing. Saints will rarely know which to expect. I do think that the recent injuries on Saints DL will tempt McVay to test that DL thoroughly. Honestly, I think Rams will win the TOP and also put up 30 points, maybe more.
Great counter points. TOP is a crucial factor that should be considered.
Here is why I would hesitate to play the exact same TOP strategy: the NO offense versus the Cowboys offense. Its night and day.
We have to be prepared to score more points. That said, I agree that testing the DL without Rankins would be wise.
