Good stuff here from Colin....

I think that's the normal misunderstandings.

There's no doubt that McVay is a great offensive coach (with some room for improvement as a head coach, and wow when that happens....).

But he took over a stacked talent list.

The idea that Goff would be nothing without McVay is nonsense. Though of course we also all know that Goff + McVay is a real good formula.

Gurley had a bad year in 2016 for a lot of reasons--mostly him (McGinnis says he was playing hurt).

Aaron Donald. Brockers. Saffold. The young OL-sters. Littleton. Barron. Last year was the only time in the history of the pro bowl where all 4 special teams spots went to guys from the same time.

If owners listen to this video, believe it, and apply it, they will be learning the wrong "lesson."

It is NOT the case that you measure a coach by overnight turnarounds.

I have never seen any NFL overnight turnaround that did not happen without there being prime talent on the roster before the new guy arrived.

McVay/Snead didn't have to build a team, they only had to complete it. That's a different thing.

By 99 Vermeil had a total of 6 guys on the entire roster who were there in 96 before he arrived.

By his 3rd year the McVay/Snead Rams will have extended more guys than that. They will certainly have kept more. And I mean starters.

So what lesson would McVay team ME as an owner? Hire a bright offensive coach who ALSO knows how to maximize the potential not just in players but in other the other coaches (Kromer is good for example but he has never done better).

Not, measure things in terms of overnight turnarounds.

If the 2017 Rams were a genuine and actual complete rebuild project. like what Vermeil inherited, we would see the potential but the results would not have been overnight.

....

I think Cowherd’s points are valid.

Yeah, Fisher had a nucleus of talent that was left for McVay. But they were looking terrible on the field. The team struggled under Fisher’s “leadership” on both sides of the ball, actually.

Goff and Gurley, most notably. The rest? Well, let’s put it this way. The Ram’s finished 4-12, despite all that talent.

McVay did a major renovation that 1st offseason

Coaching staff
Resurrected Goff
Resurrected Gurley.
Brought in Watkins
Whitworth
Sully
Woods
NRC
Kupp
Resurrected Hav
Resurrected Jamon Brown
Saffold improved to Pro Bowl level
Brockers moved
Joyner moved
JJ added
Pharoh Cooper becomes All Pro returner

Record improved to 11-5 and division championship.

That was in the FIRST danged year! There is no doubt in my mind that Fisher wouldn’t have even THOUGHT of those moves.

Cowherd is right about McVay. There is something special about this man and I think we’re gonna be enjoying many winning seasons to come. McVay is a prodigy.
