I just don't know enough about technique and all that to say who is a great OT and who isn't.
But I do know that in the end, how a guy performs is the issue; not the metrics of his size or athletic ability, and not some subjective debate about who is "great" and who isn't. Blythe is another example. He is right now a top rated RG. His arms are too short and he isn't big enough or strong enough by NFL metrics. He just happens to play the position about as well as it is being played by any RG. What else matters?
If the Rams thought they could just plug pretty much anyone in at ROT and do fine with Kromer coaching, they would not have spent the money they did to extend Havs. The guy is young, huge, and consistently good. Rarely misses reps or games.
Goff's right side is well protected whether you look at stats or just by watching the games. I do both.
Havs is an awfully good pass blocker (and btw, Whitworth's effect on him is noticable....he looks a lot like Whitworth pass blocking.....relaxed, not in a hurry). And this has become a passing offense league, and McVay is passing offense guru.
For a McVay offense, pass blocking is #1, with "good enough" run blocking (although the two usually work together).
I like the way you cut to the chase there, Rock.
Yeah, we can nitpick the metrics if we’re so inclined, but it’s undeniable that the Ram OL is kicking butt. As you say, what else matters?
