Re: Foles?

Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl. Jim Plunkett won 2. Joe Willy Namath won a Super Bowl. I believe Goff deserves what he gets. I believe the QB position is over weighted.
Aren't you mixing points with your examples?

Dilfer was a backup who came in and rode the defense to a title. But even the Ravens weren't satisfied with him and quickly chose to move on. They didn't even keep him on as insurance the very next year and paid big money to sign Elvis Grbac as the starter.

Jim Plunkett was the #1 overall pick in 1971 and had he not been in the pre-salary cap era, going to terrible teams, his career would have been much different. He was a stud QB and would have been very high-priced in today's NFL. Even so, he wasn't even acquired by the Raiders to be their starter so it's not like one could plan around winning SB's with how they did what they did. I think it's folly to suggest that acquiring an aging vet QB as your backup will lead to post season success as a plan is anything but dumb luck.

Joe Namath was the #1 overall pick for two different leagues and was paid what was considered a ridiculous amount of money. Sure, his career stats don't hold up to today's standards but I urge caution when just looking at the stats with players from the past, especially him. Joe Willie was a feared passer and paid handsomely for his services. Passed for 4,000+ yards before anyone else. He was a pioneer and prolific. That really doesn't fit what I think you're suggesting with not paying top dollar for a QB.

There are more ways than one to win a Super Bowl, there is no doubt about that. But planning around a fluke isn't the way to sustain long term success. Settling for QB scraps isn't really the best "plan A" IMO. Rams fans know that all too well. The '70's were a case study in that approach. Well, now that I look back, maybe they weren't. The Rams had decided to move on from Roman Gabriel by '73 and had traded to get an aging John Hadl. But they drafted a QB in the third round of the draft(Ron Jaworski) who I assume they intended to groom and have take over when Hadl ran out of gas.

The Rams just chose the wrong guy. They had Jaworski, Joe Ferguson and Dan Fouts to choose from and the took the least of the 3. It's funny, I was going to suggest a guy like Ferguson as a solid but not spectacular QB who the Rams would have won more with during the '70's, not knowing that he was actually available for them to draft. Fouts wouldn't have been Fouts with the Rams and maybe Jaworski suffered from the '70's equivalent of Jeff Fisher ball considering how poorly he was supported and how hamstrung a QB probably was with the Rams run first philosophy?
