Donald would present to the arbitrator that his impact looks more Von Miller-like than it does Cox/Casey-like. IOW, his impact is best defensive player in the league impact and just as much, if not more, than all other DEs/OLBs. Could the Rams credibly argue that's not true? I don't think so.
This is all moot really. The Rams directly say they are paying him as a "best defender." That's not even in dispute.
To compare AD to even the best of the current DTs is to do him a disservice and poorly underestimate him
Elite DTs are rare and he is one of those.
You mention all his sacks and pressures. That is combined with the fact that is has been shown he faces multiple blockers more than any other defensive player.
So he leads the league in qb pressures while facing more multiple blockers .
For whoever wants to do it...sorry but there's just nothing there to argue against.

I agree it's all moot since I too share the belief that if they didn't work out a long term extension this year and tried to tag him, he wouldn't play under the tag and the Rams would likely trade him.
However, when people insist that the Rams strategy should be to tag him for 2-3 years, I think it's worth pointing out that, even IF he played under the tag, it would probably be a huge fight on which tag is applicable. It's not gonna be this clean, neat and easy oh-you're-a-DT thing.
