Ever since Howie Long tried to argue that he was both DT/DL. Kevin Greene argued that he was at DL/LB.
I have a hard time believing that the NFL with ever let it fly. Please don't talk about third party arbitrators. Once a precedent is set there will be chaos.
Safeties want to be called LB's or what ever is being paid more.
Dt's will become de's. Rb's will become Wr's. He's will be Wr's. Etc. Then there will be those who want to revisit past arbitration. Chaos.
Who's to stop Zach Martin from wanting to be paid the top Offensive player money because his metrics grade higher than any QB?
It's called the CBA.
The CBA provides that in a dispute a 3rd party arbitrator would decide. That's why I'm talking about 3rd party arbitrators...I've actually read the CBA.
Players want all kinds of things. You actually have to have evidence to backup your position. Graham didn't have enough to justify his position that he was a WR instead of a TE.
My argument is Donald may have enough to say he's a DE. What he's doing at the DT position is unprecedented and is on par with the best edge defenders. Couple that with the fact that he actually is playing DE (in a 3-4 scheme) and he has a case.
You don't get chaos from everybody doing this because it's extremely rare for a player to do unprecedented things. And there's no danger of a precedent being set b/c an arbitrator will decide on a case by case basis.
