Ever since Howie Long tried to argue that he was both DT/DL. Kevin Greene argued that he was at DL/LB.
I have a hard time believing that the NFL with ever let it fly. Please don't talk about third party arbitrators. Once a precedent is set there will be chaos.
Safeties want to be called LB's or what ever is being paid more.
Dt's will become de's. Rb's will become Wr's. He's will be Wr's. Etc. Then there will be those who want to revisit past arbitration. Chaos.
Who's to stop Zach Martin from wanting to be paid the top Offensive player money because his metrics grade higher than any QB?
Who's to stop Martin from doing that? Everyone. He doesn;t have a case,
Meanwhile with Donald we're having this semantics war when there is no issue. I don't care about the tag designation. My view is if there is no deal and the Rams try to tag him, he sits out and demands a trade. Although there are some details to this fact, still, bottomline is, a tag counts against the cap even if the player holds out.
But that doesn't matter right now and probably never will. What matters now is that there is an unofficial but real category for "best defensive player" and it has existed since Watt. Then Suh, then Von Miller. The Rams use the term and you find it all through reporters writing on AD's negotiations. It's a done deal. Already happened. He gets paid as best defender and that means the last relevant contract to use as a reference point is Von Miller's from 2016.
The Rams have never once said that AD will get paid like a top DT. For one thing, they know he's heads and shoulders above even best guy s on the DT list. What they say is, he will get paid like a top defensive player.
