The writer has a point, not to mention 10 years of experience in negotiating contracts with player/agents.
The offer is reportedly record setting for a D player. The exact numbers are unknown, but regardless of one’s agenda that is a market setter.
So, FA or under contract, how can AD or his agents be insulted by such a beginning negotiating position?
Bottom line is that there is still a difference between what Rams and AD see as his worth.
It’s that simple.
If AD and his agent are insulted by an offer, it's likely not a "beginning negotiating position." The beginning negotiating position would have been a year plus ago.
As far as we know, the offer on the table could be the Rams ending negotiating position.
Besides this has been discussed endlessly. I remember you (dz) making the point that 19.01 M would be more than Von Miller and therefore the highest contract y et for a defender, but still not be appropriate or adequate to what the "best defender"category is worth in 2018 .
That and the "insulted" rumor came in a tweet from Geller that both Snead and Demoff said was flat incorrect about the numbers. So there's no actual evidence anyone said anything about "insulted." Just one presumed source out of many suggested the word and no one since him echoes it.
That is, this is old news. It's an old debate point. Long before today it was pointed out that what AD is worth in 2018 is going to have to be more than what VM got in 2016. Just adding a million to VM's 2016 numbers doesn't accomplish that.
I will even get technical. Let's pretend the number is 20 M. That's 1 M more than VM's 2016 numbers. If it is 20 M, that's a 5% increase in 3 years. If you look at all other positions, NONE OF THEM go up just 5% in 3 years. It's more like (conservative estimate, at the low end) 10% A YEAR.
This has all been said before.
