From the article; "That’s the equivalent of a four-year, $65 million with the option to get out of it any time. That sounds pretty good from the team’s perspective and Donald would essentially be forced to accept the situation."
Why bother with an extension??? Makes no sense. If the Rams hold that kind of leverage then its just bad (really ridiculous) management to do anything else. Let him get his payday after the Rams are done with him.
Why wouldn't they just let him hold out through camp and preseason and then game 1 make him come back... do this until he is 30 and then let him see what he can get. Stupid Donald.
Plenty of short-sighted opinions in this article and quite a bit that is dubious but a few points worth considering too. The Bosa thing is interesting. Not sure if Bosa is double teamed (as much, by what positions, etc. etc.) like Donald is and how much he frees up other players... also not sure if he is as versatile of a playing piece as a havoc wrecking DT... etc. etc. etc.
I would like to see the Rams sign Donald. But I'm also too concerned if they don't. A few months ago I was pretty heavy in the sign at a premium if necessary camp... mostly because it could be done within the cap and still being able to afford other players. But now I'm not sure. I'm not concerned about $20 million vs $25 million... I'm not sure I want to pay either amount to any non-QB. I'm on the fence. Its a tough decision IMO... but its one that is good to have.
Advice to Rams... take as much time as you need. Set your price and if its too rich, part ways. I think Donald is serious about holding out this season... if so, I would do everything possible to ship him out ASAP. But of course as the author of the article says, "Four-year, $65 million and Donald would essentially be forced to accept the situation." lol... yeah just do that.
Technically he is right.... see Leveon Bell and the Steelers as an example of what to do with a star player who doesn't like the deal he is offered.
Obviously the Rams don't want it to go that route, but judging by what Demoff said the other day( btw, I was surprised at his candor) it seems they have a certain number they are sticking to and usually teams don't budge much off of an offer this late into the game.....they didn't last year and Donald came crawling back the day before the season started.
I think a fair deal could look something like 4 years $85M fully guaranteed, but if Donald is seeking much more than that, it will be a long hold out. I'm hearing 8 games will probably be the max number of games he will miss.
