DTs simply can't impact the game enough to pay them the kind of jack that Donald apparently wants.
Yep; Donald is an All-World Defensive Tackle. But a Defensive Tackle can only affect a game in a limited way. We ooh and ahh at his 10 sacks and then say how much that is "For a DT". Why include those words "For a DT"? Because if he was a 4-3 DE, or a 3-4 OLB, that isn't anything special.
In a 3-4 scheme a killer OLB will affect the game more than a killer DT.
Rams need to hold to their number with Donald. And if he actually starts missing regular season games, and Suh is playing up to expectations, the Rams need to extend Suh a couple of years and take the offer to Donald off the table.
He plays this year for his contract salary.
He plays next year under the Tag.
And he plays the year after that under the Tag.
And then thank you and good bye Aaron Donald.
Trade him? Maybe. But it would have to be for at least for a 1st and 2nd rounder and to probably an AFC team. Would a team give up that kind of draft package AND pay Donald in the mid $20 mil range? Hard to imagine.
