They said that AD was worth maybe 2 wins extra.
Then they said he wasn't worth as much as an average QB.
An average QB may indeed win you 8 games, but equally he'll lose you 8 games.
AD isn't going to lose you a game like a mediocre quality QB will.
Not very well thought through.
In addition to your point here, I think this particular metric in regard to QBs rests on a faulty assumption.
Here's a quote from the article by the creator of the metric:
“Some of this is because the value for replacement level is lower for QBs (quarterbacks are harder to find),
so competence/brilliance there is more rewarded.”We all know that great QBs are hard to find. But your average QB - the Tyrod Taylors of the NFL - aren't that hard to find. In fact, an elite DT is much harder to find than an average QB.
How many DTs of Donald's caliber have existed in the history of the NFL? You can count them on one hand.
Contrast that with how many good QBs exist in the NFL right now. Or with how many QBs better than Tyrod Taylor come out in the draft every year? Several. Every. Single. Year. He's not that rare.
What's rare is elite QB play. But the metric is based on an assumption that QB play in general is what's rare.
That's an error making the metric is faulty.
