Agreed, but he will see a second deal and then it will be interesting if he gets into that 15/16 range or the Rams tag him twice. Take TG off this offense and now the defense can really hone in on the QB. He creates tons of stress for defenses right now.
Right now this is all just talk because he's signed on for a 5th year at 9+ M. But these are some of the considerations---
First, presumably Goff will grow and the offense then will be less dependent on Gurley. I can't guarantee that but I think it's likely. So not every year in the near future will be like 2017. I think this will grow into being a more balanced offense in terms of what defenses have to watch out for playing the Rams.
Plus you can have a running game in the NFL without a superstar. Teams prove that every year. You can find RBs. 7 of the top 10 running teams last year in terms of both attempts and yards per carry included guys like McAffrey, McCoy, Blount, Alex Collins, C.J. Anderson, Dion Lewis, Kamara, and Lamar Miller. Heck even upper tier backs like Johnson and Bell were 2nd round picks. So losing Gurley, if it ever gets to that, does not have to mean losing a running game.
It's like the Rams in 88 & 89. They didn't have ED, but they had Everett and Bell got 1100+ yards both years.
This all depends on how much Gurley costs in the future. If he comes in at what counts now as a normal RB 2nd contract, that will be around 9-12 M in the future. But if guys like Bell and Johnson push that market to 16 M or more, can they afford that--when it is relatively easier to find a back then a qb or an elite DT or elite CB?
