He lost his Special teams job. He is doubtful to make it as a WR. That leaves RB. Itherwise he's an afterthought
He never was a WR. They found that out very quickly. (In fact in 2014 he had more touches rushing the ball than catching it, so they certainly knew by then.) So he's not really a pure receiver, and he's not really a pure back either. He's something else.
My view is this. Either McVay has no interest in using him in the playmaker role, like he was in 2015 when he caught 52 and ran the ball 52 times. And McVay may not have any interest in doing that. And if not, then Tavon serves no purpose. Or, McV does use him that way. And frankly if Cigz can figure out how to use Tavon that way, so can McVay.
This is his history. He has 378 offensive touches in the NFL. 194 catches and 184 rushes. How many WRs get 48.7% of their touches running the ball?
So there are ways to use him. It won't be as a traditional receiver and it won;'t be as a pure RB. In the mix though there are a number of things he can do, both catching and running the ball.
Why do it? Because you like the kind of threat he represents to break big plays, and defenses respect it (if they didn't he would never have worked as a decoy).
So it can be done--put him in that hybrid playmaker role. Take advantage of the things he CAN do.
It gets down to this then. Either McVay is interested in doing that...or he's not. If he's not, then, yeah Tavon doesn't serve much purpose.
