There's been a lot of comparison between the Rams and the Patriots FO's recently. I don't know why. It's not like the Rams have even won a playoff game yet.
In any case, I'm seeing the angst that all of the new signings is creating on this board. How are we going to keep these players happy, as in $$$$ ? How are we going to be able to draft for the future? Is this the sign of things to come in the NFL? How? Why? and When?
The one thing about the Patriots that sets them apart is that their QB, arguably the best in NFL history, has unbelievably, year after year, given the Patriots a enviable cap position. Does anyone realize that the most (I said MOST) that Brady has counted against the cap in any one year is $17 M? That's right. And that was for one year. Here:
Tom Brady's career cap numbersUnbelievable. What other teams have been able to duplicate that? None that I know of. Tom's first adventure above the $20 M mark is this year, at $22 M. We are talking an 18 year span here, folks.
So, what has this to do with Jerod Goff? A lot, from the Rams viewpoint.
If Goff takes less than market with his next contract AND can take advantage of the LA commercial and advertising market to get his big bucks, especially after a Super Bowl win (I hope, I hope, I hope), then maybe, just maybe, he sees the light that Tom Brady left on and takes less from the team so the Rams can keep making trades and signing proven big name FA's who can keep the Super Bowl trophies coming. Of course, that also depends on Goff's continued improvement as a QB.
If Goff instead insists on the $30 M and mostly up numbers, then the fun may not last for long. This year or two may be it and another team fades into history.
I believe that the future is not only now, but also all on Goff.
