Some reporter came on (sorry missed his name, working on draft stuff, maybe Wyche,) but he came out and said the Rams are trying to maximize their window while they have a pro bowl QB under cheap control. ME: That leads me to believe a 3 year window?
Then they went on to say something about this is why they are collecting all this talent now, for the short and longterm plan. I either had a stroke and missed how it works for the longterm or I am just missing it. I hope someone will correct me on this part.
either way, I thought it was interesting. He also doesn't seem to think Cooks will cost more then Watkins. Which is strange if Cooks is better?...
Here's the way I see it...
Short term talent: 2018 - Goff, Gurley, Donald, Cooks, Peters, Suh, Talib, Joyner - Those are your eight elite or near elite players.
Short term talent: 2019 - Goff, Gurley, Donald, Cooks, Peters, Talib, Joyner?
Long term talent: 2020 and beyond - Goff, Gurley, Donald, Cooks, Peters - That's a strong core of elite players under 26. By 2020 they will all be expensive so some of the talent that's a step down may be lost but hopefully they continue to draft well and the Joyner's and Talib's are seemlessly replaced.
I'm not sure about Cook's contract. On the one hand, people say he's better than Watkins. OTOH, I've heard media experts say that he's a one trick pony. One trick ponies presumably are gonna command less money than fully tricked out ponies.
I don't know. It's confusing. I'm not counting on him being much cheaper than Watkins.
