I disagree that the Rams coaches are getting caught up in the buzz like fans.
They're making this move because they think it's good for football. Everything they have done to this point has demonstrated that they are all about putting a winning football product on the field, nothing more.
They have said numerous times, winning creates buzz. Winning is what's good for business.
Wade has essentially said that the reason he's such a good DC is because he fits his scheme around his players. He'll make it work even if that means he'll have to change some things he normally does.
Just because you don't think it's a fit doesn't mean it's not. Clearly, Wade feels differently. That's why he gets paid the big bucks and we don't.
If they sign Suh, there will be no true NT.
I already admitted I was wrong that Rams wouldn't be interested. But I am not going to back off my opinion that it's not a scheme fit which was based on solid football thinking. And just because you don't think there is a Suh "hype" does not mean there isn't. You have to allow for it, right? There is that possibility, what's good ffor the goose is good for the gander.
Also, and I am sure you are going to reject this, but that's fine, you don't have to believe it, but I know someone who is very well connected. I will leave it at that.
Here is what he said in an email— " has Wade ever been known as1) good evaluator?? 2) a match up coach, as opposed to a scheme coach??"
The point being is Wade is a good scheme coach, that is the "book" on him. Not every coach is good at everything and Wade has some strengths and we talked about them but he's not a god either.
This potential signing has lots of facets, it has to do with money, scheme fit, hype, winning, and maybe other things we, as fans, are not seeing.
You say it is about football, okay, when that is looked at, there are questions. And asking questions is fair game. We don't know the answers.
Suh's play has been declining last couple of years. He's going to be 31. He's going to play a new position. He's has a history of penalties, 82 in 8 years according to PFF. Plenty of those are the cheap shot things, stepping on people, kick to the nuts, etc. The one flaw Aaron Donald has is losing his cool and getting 15-yarders and even got tossed. So, will Suh's leadership be a positive thing or a negative thing?
According to Cowherd, the rap on Suh in Miami is he didn't like to practice and that he took some plays off. Cowherd said "If I know it, you can bet the Rams have heard it". Suh still has skills, but he is not what he was 3-4 years ago, IMO, he's averaged less than 5 sacks a season the last two years and fewer than 7 stuffs. His QB hits, hurries, and pressures are all down. He's not been first-team All-Pro since 2014.
There are serious questions as to whether or not he's hit a wall and we would be getting a 31-year old with fading skills.
Now about fitting the scheme around players. Yes, Wade does that. However, consider this: he has already fit the scheme to fit Donald, which is why Donald plays over a guard and not a tackle. He also flips sides to always be on the weak side which does not always happen in Wade's 3-4 defense. Wade plays what he calls a "sink" having Donald as a full-time dedicated 3-tech on the weak side. THAT is how he has tailored the scheme to his great player,.
He did similar thing with Bruce Smith in Buffalo and did things to feature JJ Watt (though he didn't put Watt on the guard and on the weak suise all the time because Watt had different skills than Donald).
So, after tailoring the front to Donald, how is he going to tailor it even more for Suh in terms of nose tackle. You have to cover every gap and if you move one piece slightly (Donald) it would be hard to move another piece of a player with similar skill sets without the defense becoming unsound.
So there are serious football questions no matter what a coach says or a coordinator.Yes, I am sure a new toy would be fun for Wade, but is he the guy? What if, and I am not saying it is true, but what if Wade isn't known as the best talent evaluator. He didn't sign Watt or Donald or Miller or Bruce Smith or Reggie White or Demarcus Ware in Dallas. he inherited all of them and then did a good job with them. If Peters and Talib go to the Pro Bowl, he would get credit for them...but Wade has been a fix-it guy
So, let's agree to disagree.
