Production is never just a direct expression of a player's abilities. It is often an expression of mitigating factors. We all know what the factors were with Watkins. Rams didn't use him the way that would be most productive (in yards anyway) but on the other hand many teams out there are going to look past that and see the player and pay him accordingly.

Here's another example. Anyone who relied simply on "production" when the Rams signed Woods completely missed who and what he was. If you knew more about Woods than simple stats you knew better than that. So everyone had the same debate about Woods when the Rams signed him, and as it turns out the "production" guys were for the most part wrong about RW.
