Like zn below, I have to say that I don't think anyone is, or ever has said that signing AD to a huge contract extension will not have any effect on their ability to sign other players.
It obviously will... at some point.
My stance has always been, you sign your elite players first and worry about the decent, fill-in players later. You don't refuse to sign the elite player because you will have to forego a decent, complementary player or two.
That principle especially holds when we're talking about not just any elite player but one who is a clear, future HOF'er if he continues on this trajectory.
I am glad to see that you've come around on how significant AD's impact on the game is and have dropped the 'DT's aren't worth it' position.
