What did Sammy do yesterday ? One catch 17 yards ??? Who cares???!!!!
Actually, man, I think your observation here makes the key point.
Sammy had a huge week last week. This week ... not so much.
Does this mean Sammy's not really all that valuable?
No, because this week Kupp had the production. Other weeks, Kupp's production has lagged because Sammy and others stepped up.
There are only so many completed passes in a game! If you have one stud and a bunch of stiffs, the stud can get high production each week. But when we have numbers of productive WRs, they will inevitably cost each other big days. When one or 2 guys have big outings, the others won't.
This is a very good thing. Generally, it means that the DC commits to containing one guy and we have the ability to just go to someone else. It makes us far harder to stop as a team.
It also means individuals' productivity will rise and fall because there are only so many balls to catch. There is quite simply a scarcity of passes in any game.
And THAT is the point with Tavon. There are only so many balls to catch and carry and Tavon is in line with guys who are simply capable of being far more consistently productive than he is. I want to see Todd run the ball and I want to see actual WRs attack downfield. And I don't see a lot of room for Tavon.
OK. I'll stop.
