I'm new to this board, and although I'm a coach for a living in a different sport, I am certainly no expert on football. However, I've been around the game, and all sports in general, enough to have strong opinions. I have been a Ram since I can remember (45+ years) and was hooked the first time my dad took me to see Roman Gabriel, Jack Snow, Jack Youngblood, and Merlin Olsen. I've had my heart broken too many times to count by the Vikings and Cowboys in those early years, I've been loyal through the move to St. Louis, and love the fact they are back in LA. I've been in the Bay Area for the last 20+ years and have put up with more than my share of grief from my wife and her family.... 49er fans.
Regarding Goff, I do believe he is a franchise QB. Obviously, there are a ton of factors that can derail a players career but as long as he stays healthy, continues to grow and learn from his mistakes, has a good supporting cast, and remains out of McVay's doghouse by valuing the ball I think he can lead us for 8-10 years. First and foremost, the kid is mentally tough. He proved it at Cal after a 1-11 freshman year and to go through what he went through last year with Fisher is enough to destroy anyone's confidence... he isn't showing a lack of confidence this preseason. The interception was a really bad overthrow that all QB's make at one time or another... Russell Wilson threw a similar interception against KC on Friday. Second, the kid is a winner. He almost single handedly changed the culture at Cal by getting his teammates to buy in to his leadership. It's obviously tough for a 22 year old kid, who also had the worst rookie season in recorded history, to lead this team but he's shown he can lead in the preseason. I don't care about his stats in these games. It's more about his learning curve, adjusting to McVay's system, and making the right decisions.
While I believe most pundits are overreacting to Goff's performance vs. Oakland and yesterday's game vs. the Chargers, it appears that McVay has given him the system and guidance to be successful this year. He's going to make some bad decisions, he's probably going to cost us a game or two... like every QB in the league has done at one time or another. On the other hand, I'm predicting he doubles our win total over last year and we win 8 or 9 games.
I'm looking forward to participating on this board and have a great amount of respect for the insight all of you have demonstrated on this topic.
