I'm conflicted, Paul.
On the one hand, none of these whiz kid coordinator candidates have earned the right to even think about demanding final say on personnel matters.
I think this comes down to the order of the Rams want list after 1st round of interviews and also other teams vying for their top choices services. If it s Kyle Shanahan they seek out and want badly, it may turn out that so does Denver, SF, etc. Let the bidding wars start once again.
ADVANTAGE = Kyle Shanahan and Marvin Demoff.
On the other hand, is Snead the best possible GM at this difficult time?
I doubt it, but if Demoff is very comfortable with him already which I suspect he is, and the new HC hire is ok with him sticking around with Demoff`s persuasiveness, he will stay and it wont really matter. Maybe Les is better than many think and he never really got a chance to do his job. And that was on Demoff and Kroenke for giving Fisher full control to begin with. They had to outbid Stephen Ross in Miami and Ross would NOT give Fisher that control. Nice move Ross! Philbin failed, but they got their guy now in Adam Gase, so good job Ross. If that guy can get it right, even Kroenke/Demoff can get it right. Have to get a little lucky though, lol. I think the Rams will be going after an OC as well and more than likely its Shanahan.
Here's an off the wall thought, but just bear with me for a second.
What if the decision has already been made to retain Snead, but in some type of Director of Player Personnel capacity? Because he has shown that his recommendations were good ones overall, despite being overruled occasionally by Fisher? They could give him a nice title and maybe a raise to ease public perceptions. He could then enhance his reputation for a year or two and be among the top future GM candidates.
Meanwhile, the Rams could hire a long term strong immediate Reggie McKenzie GM type. Something that I still believe should have been Job One, btw.
This would result in the following:
New HC has only to concentrate on hiring his asst coaches and reviewing film and start his roster pruning process.
Snead continues filling the pipeline with solid players of the type that his new HC desires.
New GM can begin a strategic program to oversee all football related personnel matters without having a coaching search, new scouting dept, FA, and the draft hitting his plate virtually all at once.
Or am I just dreaming here?
That`s a very logical solution and I think a nice fit for Snead with the Rams. Its not like he will get a currently vacant GM position with another club.
Where do we find a Reggie McKenzie right now? Is an Eric DeCosta a strong enough candidate?
I still believe the GM hire should come first, but there are no guarantees with that as we look at a team like the New York Jets.
Why not at least look for your Head Coach and GM simultaneously? I know its because Demoff would like Snead to stay, but like you said, why not give him another position now and look for your GM?
