I think Tree is doing an adequate job at MLB, but he's not physical enough to take on and shred blockers. If the rams can find a rangy thumper in the middle and Tree moved to SLB. a traditional 4-3 would be GW's base defense. Right now it's nickel because the lack of depth at LB and no true FS.
Our FS is playing as deep as a PR. I think that's GW's way of not giving up the long ball because he knows there is no "true" FS on the team that has recovery speed and good cover instincts. That is why our base defense is Nickel, we need the extra DB to help in the passing game.
Of course, this is just my opinion.
I can see that. And even if Tree only spends a season at MLB, I think that's really good for his development. Gaining the experience of play-calling can only help him wherever he lines up.
Definitely would love to see them get a FS with superior speed and range enough to play closer to the line. I'm not a big fan when they play the DBs off a mile or two. Yeah, I get that they don't want to give up the long ball, but sometimes that happens even when you play deep, especially without that rangy center-fielder. He'd just make their preferred defense that much better . . . and would give them the option to play closer -- which would be
my preference.
