I think Tree is doing an adequate job at MLB, but he's not physical enough to take on and shed blockers. If the rams can find a rangy thumper in the middle and Tree moved to SLB, a traditional 4-3 would be GW's base defense. Right now it's nickel because the lack of depth at LB and no true FS.
Our FS is playing as deep as a PR. I think that's GW's way of not giving up the long ball because he knows there is no "true" FS on the team that has recovery speed and good cover instincts. That is why our base defense is Nickel, we need the extra DB to help in the passing game.
Of course, this is just my opinion.
