You can't win the SB with the worst pass blocking center in the league as per PFF.
The Rams had to do something to solidify the C/OL pass blocking.
Their FA center choices seemed to be:
- Ryan Kelly (ranked 5th in pass blocking) (signed with Minn - 2 yrs/18mil)
- Coleman Shelton (10th ranked in pass blocking) (signed with Rams for ?)
- Drew Dalman (12th ranked in pass blocking) (signed with Bears - 3yrs/42mil
I've liked all the Rams free agent signings up to this point but this one is a head scratcher for me too? I just don't like the signing of Shelton at all. He was just adequate when he played for the Rams previously and I was happy when he was let go. And when I watched Bears games my eye test says he still looked awful and was one of the reasons the Bears O Line led the league in sacks. Like LA Doc mentioned my memories were always of him getting pushed into the Rams backfield when he faced powerful nose tackles. Maybe with two Ram All Pro guards next to him his weaknesses can be masked? Got to trust McVay on this one. I say he's good for a spot start for a game or two but Rams definitely now need to draft a quality center if they plan to have an Elite O-Line. Or have to hope that Bowers improves in his pass blocking drastically in year two. If Stafford cannot step up in the pocket like we found out in that Eagles playoff game the offense will suffer. Doesn't matter who is at WR or TE. I would have rather the Rams signed Ryan Kelly instead of Poonah Ford but just gotta trust the Rams front office on this move.
