Thanks again Blood a different question, you knowing the Rams personnel so well, would the Rams be better served going to a 4-3 instead of a 3-4? I know each alignment has it's advantages but it seems and has for a long time that the Rams have more quality players on the DL than they do at linebacker, so wouldn't it make more sense to align your primary defense to have more quality players on the field at the same time as possible? Young, Verse, Turner and Fiske sounds more appealing to whomever we can put out at linebacker besides Ernest Jones. Or do our players drafted for the 3/4 not really work as a 4/3 base defense?
Don't see that happening ... and by 3-4 vs 4-3, I am talking about the base defense.
On passing downs, Rams run a 4-2-5 and have forever, back to Wade even though there were a 3-4 base.
The only thing is the "DEs" were OLbers like Quinn and Matthews, for example, or whoever it happened to be,
Rams run a 3-4 maybe 20-25% of the time. They run a 5-1 (3-3-5) maybe about the same, I'd have to check the numbers
and the rest is some for of 4-2-5 ...
But to go to a 4-3 base ... and have say Jones as a MLBer, you'd need 2 OLBers ... and it cannot be a Young or a Verse or that kind of OLBer
It would need to be guys like Ogletree or Jolun Dunbar... and so on. Rams don;t have that kind of guy.
As for the front, sure, Verse and Young could be DEs (small) and Turenr and Fiske the DTs (just fine) and I picture that as the nickel front.
But it's not just personnel --- you cannot go to 4-3 with Shula who, as far as I know, has never coached it .If Rams wanted to go to a 4-3 they
could have hired a 4-3 coach.
My opinion is Rams will stick to a 3-4 base, they drafted guys than can play it and will still use the 5-1 and 4-2-5 most of the time...
Shula will have his tweaks, things he needs to do to get an advantage, things he can see in a player's ability but none of these guys are like Aaron
Donald who caused Fish to make a change in his scheme to fit Donald.
I think the guys plug into the current system.
I cannot eve think who'd be the OLBers in a 4-3 for the Rams that are on the roster now. Maybe the UDFA out of LSE ... Can see him as a classic 4-3 WILL ... Cannot really see Rozeboom as that. but he'd have to be one of them.
So, my best guess is no, Rams won't go to a 4-3 based on personnel and/or philisophy.
