1st Rounder
But, I can't recall any example of Snead getting as one might say "fleeced," otherwise. Can you?
Offering up 2 first rounders and a 2nd for Brian Burns was insanity. Had Carolina not saved Snead from himself, we wouldn't have Avila, Verse and next year's first rounder.
He gave up two firsts for Jalen Ramsey and then unloaded him for nothing.
Gave up a first for Brandin Cooks, which I felt was too much for a smallish, fairly average WR who had already been passed around to a couple teams.
He gave away way more than I ever expected for Stafford. When the deal was announced, I (and most of us, as I recall) were shocked at the price -- couple of firsts AND Jared Goff. Of course, that may well have been the going rate and there might've been a bidding war from other teams pushing up his price. And I understand the dynamics of Goff's big contract, but Snead (along with McVay) made that bed himself. Having said that, the price was WELL worth it in retrospect.
And there may've been some others that I cannot think of at the moment. But the thing is, I cannot remember the last time Snead got the better of a trade, where it seemed to be in the Rams' favor. Perhaps the RGIII trade, but that was long before "F them picks" Les.
Nevertheless, this is mostly nitpicking. I love Snead and what he has done and is doing. Wouldn't trade him for any other GM, with the possible exception of one or two. I just kinda wish he would do a little better in trade negotiations.
Two 1st Rounders & a 2nd rounder for a 24 year old stud pass rusher with a couple years left on his contract might be a bit much, but they were going for another Championship and expecting those selections to be at the bottom of the rounds.
Two 1st Rounders for a 25 year old CB in his prime considered to be one of the best in the league is hardly a bad deal, IMO. These guys just don't fall off trees. And trading him away to Miami was just another situation where the team took less to send him where he wanted to go. (BTW, I really liked that TE they got back along with what eventually became Byron Young. Boy, if Hunter Long could only stay healthy. Geez.)
The small fairly average Brandon Cooks had been a 1,000 yard WR everywhere he had been, and the Rams needed a deep threat. And even then, they gave up a selection at the bottom half of the first round (Oh if Goff wasn't so late on that potential TD in the Super Bowl).
You are right that the market dictated the Stafford deal and they had to move Goff's contract. This may have been a situation where the expectation of selecting at the bottom of rounds hurt them.
I agree it's nitpicking. Neither one of us know whether any of these deals could have been made for less compensation. For all we know they may not happen if they didn't pay the prices they paid. And this team might be less two Super Bowl appearances.
BTW, based upon McVay's comments Tony Pastoors got the Fiske deal done after they determined they must have him. I guess Snead was in the room though.
