For a guy like Stafford who is 36 I don't think it's wise at all to restructure and add a lot of money to his deal in 2025 and 2026. I say stand where they are with him knowing that if/when he does retire they then have plenty of money to get that next guy.

Restructuring a player's deal doesn't add any money to it. It just changes the way it is paid out and the way it is accounted for against the cap.

Using Stafford as an example.

His salary is $31M this year. They could convert $29M of that to a signing bonus for cap purposes and that wouldn't change how much money he gets one way or the other.

But as for the cap, the cap hit for that $29M can be spread over 5 years (which the Rams could do just by adding a couple void years at the end of his current deal). And to do the math that would be $5.8M a year in'24, '25, '26, '27, and '28.

Net result: the Rams could gain $23.2M by restructuring Stafford's deal without giving him another penny.

The downside: they would add $5.8M to Stafford's cap hit in both '25 & '26 and then he'd leave them with $11.6M in dead money in 2027.
