temper expectations- Rams don't have all that much money to spend

March 09, 2024 06:00AM
I never thought the Rams (nor is it showing that they could) be big free agent spenders. They have done a phenomenal job the past 13+ months reshaping the roster and getting financially healthy again.

But when free agency hits, I don't expect* them to come fast out of the gates. They have already been productive in free agency by retaining Robinson, Dotson and tendering Jackson. Even after those moves they still have the 16th most 2024 cap space.

But according to Over The Cap, they now have about $29M in cap space. If they tender Jackson at a 2nd round level, which I think they should, that takes them to $24.9M. They need roughly $10M earmarked for the Draft class. So that's $14.9M. And they're trying to keep Shelton. And my guess is they'd like to bring back Jonah Williams (as a RFA or a lower salary. It goes fast.

They do have some money. AND they have a lot of flexibility in 2025 (there is literally no contract on the roster they could not easily move on from in 2025).

But they need to be surgical and disciplined where and how they spend. A veteran CB and/or Edge rusher is obviously ideal. I also think they will extend Earnest Jones in camp, possibly structuring that in tandem with when they release Noteboom(?).

(* says the guy that was sure they'd let Dotson walk...)
