I wince at the unguarded enthusiasm for Smith at $10 mil as a "bargain" compared to a younger phenom at a lesser position for more money in Dotson.
What if... the Rams were to do as suggested, move AJ to RG to accomodate Smith and he lasts for four to seven games? At $10 mil that could have been paid to an edge or safety?
Whit, though "older" came in as healthy and durable as a Clydesdale horse, an inspiring lockerroom presence, and more than a culture fit. He was instrumenal in molding the Ram culture for as long as he wa here. Does Smith bring those latter traits? Dunno - but for me the Whit/Smith comparison ends with their both being great - when healthy - left tackles.
I think the Rams have learned the painful lesson of '22 when the cartoffs from OL injuries requirea fleet of field ambulances. Since then we've added healthy players - and Smith ain't one, regardless the upside when healthy.
