Seems some people had trouble understanding that it was a new game, if both teams posssed the ball and the score was still tied, they would keep going until they had a winner.

Exactly. They'd been exchanging FG's all 4th quarter. No reason not to play the odds that their defense could hold KC to an FG or stop them entirely.
Then a 49ers FG wins it on the next drive. 2 ways to win. It was the right move. Chiefs don't make that 4th down and Shanny is a genius.
