Hey Saguaro!
Glad you're back on the board!
I'm confused by some of what you say. Here's my take:
When Goff took the snaps I started counting: ONE-thousand, TWO-thousand, THREE-thousand... Some plays were designed for him to get rid of the ball sooner, some were run plays. But for the most part (not always) he hd plenty of time to throwon slow-developing plays, or plays where he hd the luxury to wait for somebody to shake the coverage and get open - or at least it seemed that way to me.
Another thing: When the Rams brought the Jones blitz it seldom got home. Detroit picked it up. It's not that the Rams didn't try to blitz with Jones; it's just that, most of the time, it didn't work. That enabled Goff to get a pass off - maybe not hold the ball for five seconds, but when he only needed two to find and hit a hot read, he got it. It seemed to me that as the game wore on,
Goff was doing better because he had more time.
Mayfield, meantime, was getting chased around quite a bit, his protection would evaporate and he'd hold the ball for longer - but he was running around with it. Many of his throws, on or off platform, were into tight windows. Goff, meantime had receivers getting more open, grass instead of hats around them at the point of the catch. (I'm sure the 49ers will watch plenty of tape and plan against letting this happen again. We'll see what they come up with - cheap shots and jersey-grabbing, maybe? What goes around coming back around?)
That's what I saw - and the stats you put up tend to confirm my observations. Give Goff time, and he's accurate, can make the throws, and make good decisions as to where to go with the ball. The Lions O line gave him that time - and his receivers did their jobs well, getting yards after the catch.
Pressure him with any consistency, though, and he tends to falter. We'll see how Detroit does against Bosa, Warner, and crew. They have a chance to win if they can protect Goff and, conversely, if their beast Hutch can get to Purdy. He's worse under pressure.
I hope this clarifies what I saw and what I was saying earlier; I think by the time we beat the weeds back we might be in agreement.
Cheers, mtramfan
