I think we have to plan on moving forward as if Bennett isn't there, and if he retrurns, evaluate him in light of what we have then. Snead and FO are being quite generous in providing him the dignity of confidentiality and a financial cushion to support a furough hile he undergoes the disciplines neccessary to function successfully as a human being. He my be looking at a tortuous task that will take some time. What his or th Rams options will be will not be known for a while.
Meantime, watch the old movie or better, if you can find it, read the old baseball book "Fear Strikes Out" by Jimmy Piersall.
Another good watch is "The Great Santini."
Bennett's seemingly enigmatic collapse follows what, for some of us, is a recognizeable pattern. He was put under stultifying, life throttling pressure to perform as a kid who could throw a football from about age nine with no letup.
Parental Iispiration, discipline, dedication, and instilling a hard work ethic in their children are all good things - but when there is nothing else in the life of a child whose family is hell-bent on his "success" his psyche can be shattered. To what extent is this the case with Stetson Bennett? My sense is that the public drunk scene in college and success followed by flameout on the big stage of NFL football is not about alcohol per se - it's a manifestation of a syndrome that runs much deeper.
I wish him well.
