This is a year of player personnel evaluation. This is not to defend Morris who, I think, is overrated. Yet, he is no dummy either.
I think everyone needs to relax and stop over analyzing....especially when considering the larger context of this year's goals.
Stafford hasn't forgotten how to QB. McVay hasn't forgotten how to coach. They just don't have the horses, and some of the ones that we'll count on going forward are just puppies learning how to play the NFL game. Others won't be on this team next year.
Funny how super successful coaches go through down years and suddenly they don't know how to coach. Bellicheck and Pederson come to mind. Pederson was fired, and now has a potential Superbowl team. Bellicheck will get the Pats right once given the horses and their owner understands that.
Yeah, it is amazing to me that the Rams have played over their heads considering we were supposed to be one of the worst teams with 15 rookies and we’ve been in all but one of the 8 games we played this year with one of the toughest schedules in the NFL….
But somehow McVay is washed up?
People need to relax
Have to agree with both of you. As I read takes on this season so far across electronic Ramsdom I just shake my head. It's either we've gotten spoiled or most fans cannot keep their eye on the reality of the situation. Or maybe a bit of both.
McVay has plenty of areas he deserves criticism, but this team has been playing over their heads for most of this season so far. Same goes for the defense. All coaches have these elements though. We just know them well because it's our team. What matters is we win and do well in big games.
This draft is a great example of how those positives and negatives work. Snead probably ran his greatest draft as GM in '23 but he whiffed big time on the backup QB in missing whatever it was that has sidelined Bennett, and he drafted a RB with upside but who lacked what the Rams actually needed which is dependability, and we could say "well both those misses were late round" but that doesn't really matter. What matters is the roles are not ready to step up and in when the window opens and the team suffers as a result.
But it was a pretty damn nice draft. Just not enough to allow them to reload in one year.
Offensively the Rams have a few problems, and some of them very serious problems that will prevent them from contending. One is LT. The other is the quality of the OL as a whole, as they have not played together as a unit vs the better fronts and have allowed too many free rushes into the backfield. They lack speed at wideout, and Tutu doesn't really address that because he's a guy who occasionally makes plays vice a top threat type who can continuously provide the threat. Kupp looks like he came back too early from the injury to me. Nacua shows that he's a rook at times vs the best coverages. But even when healthy both Kupp & Nacua are "small TE" type weapons who can eat up underneath but not stretch the defense. We still lack that element. And don't even get me going on RB, which is critical and has always been to have some threat from the backfield.
I think the offense has better days ahead this season for a couple reasons, those being that the OL should be able to improve as a group though they do need to address LT, C, and RG still. Kupp hopefully will come back up to speed physically, and hopefully we see that immediately after the bye. Maybe the Rams decide to start featuring Freeman, who at least will make the most of the space available and help keep us from falling behind the chains even if he offers zero threat of big gainers. And Stafford needs to play better, i.e. quit with the gambling throws the moment he takes a couple hits. He has not played well.
Defense is even worse in terms of the parts they're using. This roster requires major investment of pieces in order to get back to contention still. Players matter. They affect the scheme and what you can do. They affect how you call it. No coach looks like a genius with subpar parts. So longwinded response I realize but I am frustrated too, but I think at least staying grounded on what we're actually witnessing here is important.
