McVay and certainly Stafford will argue he is as good as ever and has not lost anything.
Don't you believe it! Last year's injuries alone argue against that. Time bats 1.000
He is not that guy anymore who can throw that much in a game and not have some fatigue. Very reminiscent of the season that Jared started out like game busters throwing almost every down and by mid-season he seemed like his arm was dead or that he was protecting an injury and his season fell flat.
This is not a doom and gloom we simply need to be coached sensibly.
McVay is acting like he needs to prove something regarding his offensive genius and if he wants to do that, he is going about it the wrong way. He does not have Stafford in his prime. We signed on for the Stafford we had 2 years ago now we have him 3 yrs later with a nice hefty price tag so we cannot ignore the need to preserve him and to extend his career.
McVay is not catching up with Kyle Shanahan in the offensive guru department especially in getting the most out of avg QB talent. He is not going to catch up with Mike McDaniel who has a very stacked offense that has a great marriage between run and pass. What McVay has over them is a SB victory and we are not close to buying ourselves into another one so its time he simply coach like a SB champion Coach and focus on getting the wins and not style points.
This is why the team must have a new identity no different than you would try and protect a young QB you must do the same for a veteran who has some road wear.
It seems they both protest too much comparing last year to this year's offseason but not to any prior off-seasons when he would have been younger and expectantly healthier.
Living the dream of past glory and success is intoxicating. But with the years he has on his body and our focus on the vertical passing game defying the necessity of a legitimate run game we are just courting disaster and we will be exposed as a team that relies on finesse and can be beat-up vs more physical opponents.
We must evolve. Tom Brady did evolve as long as he could. His well documented regimen to preserve his youthfulness, health and prolong his career speak for itself. I don't know what Matthew Stafford is doing but he may simply be below that arc and unless someone can acknowledge that, his career will be hard to sustain at a SB caliber.
