You have to be kidding me. Someone takes a play (where Goff completes the pass) and says he isn't all that good of a QB because he didn't see his favorite receiver open for perhaps a TD?
Watch it again and see what he is ACTUALLY saying.
He says that Goff played it right. He said the potential touchdown was not even in the progression and that passing on the possible touchdown was not
a bad play because it was not part of the play. The seam route was a clear out.
So, Goff did what he was taught, hit the Dig route. He did. Good play, first down. Moves the change. He's a good quarterback. That is what he said.
Then, from his memory bank he compared/contrasted why Stafford is MORE than a good quarterback. He took the same pass concept, similar coverage
and how Stafford TOOK IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
That is the point.
He never said Goff was "not that good of a quarterback" he specifically did not criticize Goff for not throwing to St' Brown ... he PRAISED Stafford for being great enough to go off script and get a touchdown on a clear out route.
His point is Goff is very good. Stafford is great.
He's not some Rams fan, he's a national writer. He has no agenda. He just use one play as an example of
why Stafford is able to do things Goff was not and it SUGGESTS why McVay traded Goff plus two #1 picks
and more for Stafford, who was fairly old and a little injured and streaky.
You can praise Stafford without ripping Goff. Taking his example to the extreme is not really what it is all about.
Further, It isn't one play anyway, we could find a ton of plays Goff left on the table. McVay saw it and wanted
to upgrade the QB position
it worked and Rams got better QB play
And you bring up flaws Stafford has ... that's totally fine and fair. He's never been truly elite. He is streaky
and has a lot of elite traits and some not-so-elite traits and Goff has a couple things he does better than
Stafford
But, in the final analysis Stafford does what McVay wants a lot better and this play is a microcosm of it.
Not that Benjamin as perfect, I don't think he got the coverage right... I think he blames the wrong guy
on the busted coverage... but still, to see a play in a game and remember a similar play from 16-18 months
ago is impressive.
That's the takeaway
