Using the chart below from [
overthecap.com] for this post.
The chart is configured to show the impact of the Rams cutting Stafford prior to each season, but it is very useful when describing what happens if Stafford retires.
Looking at 2024, if the Rams cut him before June 1 they'd absorb $86.5M in dead money and take on a $37.5M cap hit.
Part of that pain is the fact that his 2024 salary is guaranteed. If Stafford retired before the 2024 season rather than getting cut I'm fairly sure that the Rams wouldn't have to pay him that $31M ... which means the dead money would be down to $51.5M and the cap hit would be 'only' $6.5M. Not great, but not a killer either.
Stafford has no guaranteed money after 2024 so the cap impacts of Stafford retiring before the 2025 season are the same as the Rams cutting him before the 2025 season. What the chart below shows is the same either way: if Stafford retires before the 2025 season the Rams would carry $37M against the 2025 cap and realize $13.5M in cap savings. (Basically, if Stafford plays in 2025 his cap hit would be $50.5M, but if he retires his cap hit drops to $37M.)
