Stafford's contract is shown below, from [
overthecap.com]
... and here's what I think it says taken from the 'Dead Money and Cap Savings' column.
If the Rams traded him now it would be a $54M cap hit: I don't see how they could do that even if they wanted to. (Which they don't.)
If they traded him after the 2023 season they'd take a $6M cap hit. If someone can explain why the Rams would do that I'm all ears.
The Rams could trade him after the 2024 season and save $8.5M against the cap. (I know it says $13.5M, but there's a $5M roster bonus due in 2025. I'm assuming the Rams would pay that before they could trade Stafford.) But it seems to me that that's right when the next window might be opening, and the Rams have set up their cap for the next several year in such a way that they probably won't need that money. (And with any luck Stafford will still be at the top of the game so the Rams won't want to move him.)
And after the 2025 season the Rams would save $26M against the cap if they traded him. (Yes, it does say $31M. Again, that roster bonus ...) Could they find a team willing to take on Stafford's $26M salary for one season? Would the Rams have a viable option if they traded Stafford? If the answer to both question is 'yes' then it could happen.
