I have mixed feeling about Morris.
I hate the soft zone which is designed to make the offense earn it by taking the what the defense is give them with is underneath routes in the passing game. When watching the games it is like death from a thousand cuts.
However, I think our personnel has something to do with that. Outside of Donald we have lacked a consistent pass rush except for when we have Von Miller. With Miller and Floyd we were solid on the edge though I always thought Floyd was a bit overrated. I really didn't have a problem with our defense when we had Miller and a good pass rush. Miller could also set the edge and was a big help in the running game too. So with the right personnel he can coach a good defense.
Evaluating Morris this year it will be interesting. He has a defense with young guys that don't have a lot of experience. The defensive backfield is really young with only 1 veteran in Fuller. Morris is probably going to have to protect those guys as much as possible from a scheme perspective. Pass Rush? You got Donald but he is the only proven and experienced pass rusher.
We have hardly any experience on the edge which obviously impacts the pass rush but also will be a factor in the run as we can expect these guys to get sucked in on the play fakes and the running game to flourish when we fail to set the edge.
If Morris gets the defense into the middle of the pack he will have done a magnificent job. He will have shown he can develop the young talent and deploy them in the defense in to make them successful in impacting the game. That said I would expect a slow start and look for improvement as these guys gain game experience.
BTW I don't think the best defensive coordinator in Football could do more than make this a middle of the pack defense.
