Pretty sure Martz would have been hired away that off-season.
Wasn't there a rumor at the time that Vermeil was persuaded to retire so they wouldn't lose Martz?
So, Martz couldn't go anywhere...he'd get the job when Vermeil stepped down . . . right away
in one year, two years....what is not known is how long he'd be made to wait.
Like if he didn't get it by say 2003--could he then walk?
I think the stuff I have heard and read is that there was some nudging of Vermeil out the door.
Not because Martz was leaving but that Shaw and the GM what's his name --- didn't think
Vermeil was all that great. They almost fired him the year before.
But that's a rumor...who knows what really happened.
