They have a tendency to expect whatever the previous season brought. So in this case it translates to a rookie whose head was spinning in year one must be in a dogfight with Shelton.

But all respect to Shelton aside he's not a starter at OG at this level. He's a depth piece at best as a guard because he gets pushed around by the bigger interior linemen. The guy is fine at Center even in a starting role I think, though I still think he is marginal as a starter there. I do think he's better in the run game than Allen, but McVay prioritizes pass pro so Shelton all things considered is a depth piece.

Chalk all that up as it pertains to Bruss and what you have is a situation where he will either show year two and win that job or he's probably a bust. It's start or bust for Bruss. Because guards don't need multiple years to translate in this league. Taking a rookie redshirt, ok fine. Not ideal but it happens. But by year two he's either gonna be good enough or he isn't.

So my expectation is Bruss wins that job. There won't be some titanic camp battle and if there is it's gonna be bad news.
