Not making sure they got Von was an enormous mistake because it is their model that put them in the situation they were in. He was a requirement for this defense. They were terrible before we traded for him in the Super Bowl season. The signs were there.
Also I think they badly miscalculated at LT. Boom was getting worked over before the injuries started up with the line. They were springing leaks all over the front. That was a collaborative error with all involved too I think, full team failure from OL coach to GM.
This is why I think McVay is such an important part of the conversation here. He was freshly married last offseason, riding the high of the Super Bowl, and making assumptions all over the joint with the roster. It started with him and I am sure he blames himself and I think the guy is going to come roaring back this season even with a lesser roster.
I don't think we're going to win 10+ games necessarily. But he is going to re-establish We Not Me and the team identity that got them that title. It's gonna look a lot different than last season even with lesser pieces IMO.
an aging super star with injury history and some crazy crazy money on his contract....probably a disaster had he resigned unless he could play LT or G last year
Fair point and probably true. But would he have been injured had we kept him no way to know. Either way our defense was a different unit before we traded for him, so letting him walk and not restacking the secondary killed our chances of having a good defense.
I think the lessons there can be applied to this year too. So hopefully they restack the secondary to allow for forcing QBs to hold the ball a bit. And add some high motor/contain ends to pair with AD and that front. I think it is more realistic to fix the secondary this offseason than to find a top rusher to pair with AD.
