I remember it differently, and these articles line up with what I thought.
"The Rams trading Woods is seen as a move to clear salary after the team signed wide receiver Allen Robinson on March 17. " [
theathletic.com]
"The salary cap was a big factor in the trade ...it also had to do with wanting a different skill set at wide receiver," [
theramswire.usatoday.com]
"When the Rams announced their signing of wide receiver Allen Robinson the writing was on the wall for Rams receiver Robert Woods. While Woods was traded as a result of the Robinson signing ..." [
www.si.com]
"When the Rams signed receiver Allen Robinson in free agency, it signaled the end to Robert Woods' run in Los Angeles/" [
www.nfl.com]
Edit: Woods signed a 5 year, $34M deal with the Rams in 2017. In 2020 - with 2 years still left on his original deal - the Rams gave Woods a 4 year, $65M extension with $32M guaranteed.
